In this article I will be answering the question “how many eggs should bodybuilders eat a day?”. This is an interesting topic as eggs are certainly a staple in the diet of many bodybuilders.

Eggs can be classed as a superfood and very good for your health. This article will explore the nuances surrounding this topic. I hope that you will enjoy reading.

How Many Eggs Should Bodybuilders Eat A Day?

This is a loaded question and one that is not set in stone. It all depends on your individual needs and requirements. Bodybuilders should typically aim to consume at least 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight.

A diet rich in eggs can help to satisfy some of your protein needs. In general, 3 to 5 eggs a day would be typical for a lot of bodybuilders. However, some bodybuilders consume a lot more than this.

A contentious point is also whether to consume the yolks or not. This divides opinion in the bodybuilding community. Some bodybuilders do eat the whole egg, others prefer just the whites.

Depends On Your Needs

Firstly, it should be stated that eating eggs is not compulsory in any diet. If you prefer to get your protein sources from meat predominantly then that is fine.

Eggs are a good protein source though as a single egg contains over 10g of protein. In addition eggs contain important minerals such as calcium and magnesium, they are also rich in vitamin A and vitamin B12.

If you don’t like eggs then you don’t have to include them in your diet. If you enjoy eating eggs and like the variety then you should consider including them into your diet for bodybuilding purposes.

Consuming three to five eggs per day would be a good addition to your diet and ensure that you are reaping the nutritional benefits of eggs. If you are heavier and have higher protein requirements, you could eat ten eggs a day.

Egg Whites Or Egg Yolk?

There is a huge debate surrounding whether you should consume whole eggs including the yolk, or just the whites.

In my view, this is a personal preference. It is true that you will get more nutrients from consuming the yolk as well. The yolk contains half the protein of the egg and it also contains more cholesterol.

One reason why some people prefer to consume egg whites over the whole egg has to do with cholesterol. By only consuming egg whites you avoid the extra cholesterol.

This again causes a lot of debate. Ultimately, it is down to you whether you consume whole eggs or just the whites. For convenience you can buy liquid egg whites in bulk which save a lot of time.

Many bodybuilders prefer the convenience of liquid egg whites over having to prepare eggs themselves. Even though making scrambled eggs or an omelette is relatively fast, liquid egg whites involve no work at all!

Greg Doucette’s Views

Greg Doucette is a prominent figure in the online fitness community and his views tend to be informative and controversial at the same time.

His views on eating egg whites vs whole eggs for dieting is interesting. I do agree that egg whites are better for dieting because they are mostly pure protein and thermogenic.

This means that they will burn up more calories and help you to burn more body fat. You would get more satiety from consuming lots of egg whites, it is a high volume but will burn more calories.

He makes the case that eating 14 egg whites is a lot more filling than eating 3 whole eggs. This is very true, for dieting and getting leaner you would be better off eating a high volume of egg whites instead of whole eggs.

Final Thoughts

How many eggs should bodybuilders eat a day? There are no hard and fast rules and it really does depend on your individual needs.

If you are cutting and want to get leaner, you could try consuming a high volume of egg whites daily instead of eating whole eggs. You can get the missing vitamins and minerals in the yolk from other food sources.

If you want to enjoy whole eggs as part of your bodybuilding diet then you can do so as well. Eating three eggs or more a day would be a good start, if you are very heavy and have lots of muscle mass you can consume five to ten eggs a day.
